The Soccer Ball

Urban Initiatives had their big benefit on Friday and I think everyone would agree that it was both a resounding success and a ton of fun. The total attendance was over 500 people which was a staggering number compared to the original estimates. My parents made it in for the event and even “The Dows” himself was in attendance (although I must admit I found him hanging out by the coat check around 9:30pm).

The night itself was quite eventful… from Curl-the-Head’s screaming at P Diddy in the middle of the party that he [Diddy] would suck Rex Grossman’s dick, to the U.P.’s bidding war, to PS getting punched in the face at the after-bar for knocking on some guy wearing a first graders t-shirt – suffice it to say – it was night to remember. Can’t wait for next year.

Went with a ton of people to watch The Record Low play at the Empty Bottle Friday night. The posse included Curl-the-Head, Shark, my Bro, CJ, Ish, Bennie, Flood, CC, White Martin, Davis, Masood… I’m sure I’m forgetting someone but whatever. The show was great (although perhaps a bit short) and I’m looking forward to the album release next month. They got a great turnout for the show and I could see them becoming fairly successful. After the show we all headed over to Nick’s to close out the night… the last photo must of been taken somewhere towards the end of the night. I told you I’d give you props Bennie Boy…

10 Great Songs

I was hoping to take some photos on Wednesday when I went to check out the French Kicks and Eagle*Seagull at Schuba’s but – alas – I forgot to bring my camera and neither performance was really quite what I would call awe-inspiring. I will say the French Kicks sound true to their albums and their lead singer is a GIANT – like Dikembe Mutombo meets The Brady Bunch.
Instead here’s 10 songs I really dig at the moment – the first one by Vetiver is the best song I’ve heard in months – you can get it on iTunes for 99ยข and believe me it’s worth it.

1. “Idle Ties”: Vetiver [from the album To Find Me Gone] (2006)
2. “When It Flows”: Great Lake Swimmers [from the album Bodies and Minds] (2005)
3. “On a Neck, On a Spit”: Grizzly Bear [from the album Yellow House] (2006)
4. “As You Wish”: Damien Jurado [released as a single on MySpace] (2006)
5. “Many Rivers To Cross”: The Walkmen [from the album Pussy Cats] (2006)
6. “Are You Swimming in Her Pools?”: Swan Lake [from the album Beast Moans] (2006)
7. “Underwater (You & Me)”: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah [from the forthcoming album Some Loud Thunder] (2007)
8. “Bottom of the World”: Tom Waits [from the album Orphans] (2006)
9. “The Ruling Class”: Loose Fur [from the album Born Again in the USA] (2006)
10. “Scarlet Town Part II”: Johnny and the Moon [from the album Johnny and the Moon] (2006)

UW Basketball Game

Curl-the-Head, H and I went to the Wisconsin/Minnesota basketball game on Saturday where Wisconsin thoroughly pummeled the lowly Gophers 68-45. The game was fairly uneventful minus a few dunks by Tucker and Flowers – but the whole outing was well worth it because we got the opportunity to see this acrobatic Asian woman riding an 8ft unicycle flip 5 ceramic bowls (all at the same time) from her foot onto the top of her head. Haker said it was the most amazing feat he had ever seen in his life… I wasn’t willing to go that far but I will say it was pretty incredible.
